It means "hello" in Ladakhi.
All around the lakes of Ladakh (this was Pangong Tso), you can stay in the homes of the locals & they'll provide you with food & lodging. We were sitting & talking with the father of the gentleman who housed us. He didn't talk much except the occasional hello.
